A Basic History of the United States by Clarence B. Carson
6 volume set. Carson covers the basic flow of U.S. history in concise chapters. Well organized, recommended to use as a text students can read and then outline to see the big picture. Reading level is about 9th grade.

The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
